This is a weird time. I never thought that a home made surgical mask would be the first item in a long dreamed about online shop. But here we are! I've been getting a LOT of questions about the masks, so I'm compiling some of those questions for you. This information is changing really quickly, but it is true to the best of my knowledge, and I will try to provide some sources where I can!
Enjoy!
1. Are Your Masks Washable?
Answer: YES! All the masks are made of cotton, and they have been pre-washed to prevent color bleed and shrinkage. ALL masks can be washed and dried, and I HIGHLY recommend doing so before you wear your new mask! They may get a little wrinkly after washing (cotton tends to do that!), but they can also be ironed if you like. You can also submerge your mask in rubbing alcohol and air dry. There is a some evidence that UV light helps sanitize masks, so a little sunshine can't hurt!
2. How Protective are fabric masks, really?
Answer: Honestly the jury is still out. This study found that fabric masks can be up to 79% effective- more effective, actually, than commercial surgical masks (not N95s). Additionally, a layer of flannel like my new flannel inserts (dropping on April 13), will provide an additional layer of protection, potentially pushing the homemade mask up into the 80%+ effective range.
3. What should I use as a filter?
Answer: If you don't want a flannel insert, there are a few other household items that you can use in your mask. The best thing is actually a HEPA vacuum filter or bag. If you, like me, have a filterless vacuum, non woven fabrics, like those in your non shiny reusable grocery bags, make a good option. Finally, things like dried clorox or lysol wipes, coffee filters, or blue mechanic's shop towels are also options, albeit less effective. And don't forget to remove these last three options before washing, as your washing machine will certainly destroy them.
4. Is a filter necessary?
Answer: Necessary, no, but a good idea, especially if you're an essential worker or coming into contact with a large number of people.
5. Where are you donating your masks?
Answer: My masks are going to several Dayton area places: I've already donated to the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association, and my next batch are heading to area firefighters. I'll try to always post on my social media feeds where I'm donating, so make sure to follow me on facebook and IG to stay up to date.
6. How many masks have you made and how long will you keep making them?
As of this writing (4/11 in the evening), I've made over 350 masks. I will continue to make them until this pandemic is over and we don't need them anymore. I haven't set a deadline.
7. Your masks are cute, but I want something custom! Is that possible?
Answer: Yes, of course! Just add the "custom sewing" listing to your cart and we'll get in touch. Materials are a little hard to get right now, but we can certainly try! Custom sewn masks may take longer due to the need to get materials and prep them.
