What a WEIRD Spring! If, like me, you are beginning to chafe at the bonds of being safe at home, I hope you will find this useful! Here are Five Things To Do You Haven't Thought Of Yet: 1. Write letters and cards, especially to those who may be isolated and/or especially vulnerable. This article has some national resources listed in it and talks about how much this can help those feeling alone. There are certainly plenty of people locally who would love to hear from us as well! 2. Develop a (stronger) meditation, prayer, or journaling practice. I use the app "Calm" on my phone. It is a secular meditation app, but I find it helps me open myself up to hearing God's voice. When I'm done with my Daily Calm, I journal for about 20 minutes, which helps me feel centered and less anxious for my day. 3. Become an expert. In anything. There are so many resources at our fingertips during this time! It's a great time to pick a topic and really learn about it. Learn a language, study a period of history, learn to recognize different artists or composers- anything you're interested in has plenty of information online to keep you busy reading, watching, listening, and learning! 4. Get into podcasts. Podcasts are sort of like radio shows- they're completely free, and you can download them straight to your smart phone from a podcasting app like Apple podcasts, Stitcher, or iHeart Radio. There are thousands of them on pretty much any topic you can think of. A few recommendations to get you started:
"Stuff You Should Know", which spends an hour exploring literally any topic you can think of from grass to the pied Piper
"Dressed" is a fashion history podcast
"Pop Culture Happy hour" talks about movies, music and books,
"The Moth" are true stories, told by real people on a variety of themes.
5. Find some joy. I made a list the other day of some of the things that bring me joy. And even now, in the midst of uncertainty and lockdown, I am busily trying to inject some more joy into my daily life. Listen to music, have a living room dance party, read a book that feels good, watch happy but garbage TV, call a friend you miss, look at silly memes, ask your Echo to tell you a joke. Find some joy. Humans are complex- and we can be sad about the world and find joy in the daily.
I hope this list brings you some joy in the coming days- and helps keep you thoughtful and busy in the week ahead.
